Ozzy Osbourne

There was that one time in 1984 in when Ozzy Osbourne was so bombed on Memphis' Beale Street that was taken into custody so he could sober up.  Oh, and he just happened to be wearing a rad St. Louis Blues jersey shirt in his mugshot.

Beale Street is a party street so most people are three sheets to the wind while on Beale. Plus it's Ozzy freaking Osbourne in the mid '80s when, I'd hazard a guess, his baseline was inebriation.  So, that begs the question as to how much alcohol was in his system to result in him being arrested for public intoxication??

There 's no better way, in my opinion, to commemorate a mildly sports-related mugshot than a custom trading car.

It was a obvious choice to go with the '84 Topps hockey inspired design.  It's quite perfect that the design calls for two images so both front and side view of Ozzy's booking photo could be utilized.  The back sees the event detailed in the matching '84 style.

NOES

I wanted to get in one last horror mini-set before everything is all joy this and twinkly lights that.

A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984 so that gave me another chance to use one of my favorite design templates, the 1984 Topps hockey inspired design.  For this mini-set I gave the frame a little Freddy sweater touch.

With this set I've officially completed the 80's horror hat-trick; Voorhees, Myers, and Krueger.

Sudden Death

The other night I was watching my VHS copy of Sudden Death (1995). This was my first time ever seeing it. The movie stars Phantom Cardboard favorite Jean-Claude Van Damme. If you’re like me and have not seen this then without spoiling it too much for you the movie is basically Die Hard set inside of a hockey stadium during Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. It’s a pretty decent movie in my opinion.

1984 Topps hockey
I watched this movie just to watch a movie. Like most VHS junkies I’ve got more tapes then I’ll ever be able to watch by virtue of picking them up from thrift stores for pennies on the dollar. Never the less, I watch new tapes as often as I can so they’re not just looking all pretty on my bowing shelves while collecting dust. The point is I really had no intention of making a card from this movie, I was just getting the return on my $.10 (probably) investment. Then Jean-Claude had to go and disguise himself as Penguins goalie Brad Tolliver (played by former NHL’er Jay Caufield). Yep. That’s gotta be a card said me, to me.

For this one I used a favorite of mine, the 1984 Topps hockey inspired design. No designs from 1995 were going to work as well as this one did for my tastes. The main picture is great with JCVD karate kicking one of the baddies in full goalie pads. Only thing that could have topped that would be him doing his patented splits in the goalie get-up.

Is That Goal Regulation Size, Or What!?

For the longest time I didn't make any cards featuring Adam Sandler despite all of his classic sports related movie roles.  I just didn't think there was a good chance at getting any of my cards signed.  That all changed because now I know a guy who knows a guy who can get me some Sandler sigs. Once that relationship was forged I went to work and churned out 7 Sandler joints as they say in hip-hop circles.

The one above is by far my favorite of the lot. Sandler has some fun movies, but I have to think Happy Gilmore is the best. It starts out right away on a hilarious note with Happy trying out -unsuccessfully for at least the tenth time- for the semi-pro (I'd presume) Waterbury Warriors. That whole scene is classic, and now has a card devoted to it.

Happy Gilmore was released in 1996 but, like I have with almost anything released after roughly 1990, I plugged it into a more vintage inspired design.  For this one I used a 1984 Topps hockey inspired design.  For the record, I f***ing love this design and have used it any time it has made sense to me to create a number of really fun cards. It screams 1980's card design to me. I love the rounded two-tone frame and the secondary picture.

I used the Warriors' team colors for the two-tone frame of course.  My favorite part might just be the "team prospect" text.  Every so often you'd see text like that reading something like "traded to the ..... ".  I always assumed it was a last minute thing when a guy would be traded but it was too late to re-do his card.  Since Happy never officially made the Warriors' roster, well, he's a team prospect.

Now, I'll just wait with bated breath for some Sandler autographs. If you'd like to own a copy of this card it's available in the PCb online store.
